Egypt secured their first-ever World Cup knockout stage victory, defeating Australia 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, with Hossam Abdelmaguid scoring the clinching goal.

The victory came in Egypt's fourth World Cup appearance, with Mohamed Salah starting despite a hamstring injury. Emam Ashour gave Egypt the lead in the 13th minute before Australia equalized when Mohamed Hany scored an own-goal, becoming the first player to score two own-goals in the same World Cup.
