Mendoza Named Big Ten Athlete of the Year

Former Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza was named the 2025-2026 Big Ten Jesse Owens Male Athlete of the Year, the conference announced on Wednesday.

Mendoza, who won the CFP national championship and Heisman Trophy with Indiana last season, becomes the sixth Hoosier athlete to receive the honor. He is the first since track star Derek Drouin in 2013.

The now Las Vegas Raiders quarterback is only the fourth player in the common draft era to win the Heisman, a national championship, and go No. 1 overall in the same season. He'll compete for the Raiders' starting job when training camp begins July 23. tr-sport.click
