At the 2026 NFL owners meetings, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft voiced support for an 18-game schedule but insisted on adding another bye week, trimming preseason games from three to two, and requiring every team to play an international game.
Indianapolis Colts owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon also backed the expansion, particularly if players want it, while acknowledging health concerns. The league may implement the 18-game schedule as early as 2027, though negotiations with the NFL Players Association, now led by JC Tretter, will require time.
