Soccer-One killed, dozens hurt as Peru stadium event goes awry
April 3 (Reuters) - At least one person was killed and several injured on Friday ahead of a derby match at the Alejandro Villanueva Stadium in the Peruvian capital, said club Alianza Lima, a day before it faces off against Universitario.
The club offered condolences and solidarity for the casualties, which media said included 60 injured during a "flag‑waving event" at the stadium, popularly known as Matute.
"We are fully and transparently collaborating with the competent authorities," the club added in its statement, vowing "total transparency" in helping to clarify the facts of an incident whose cause was not immediately clear.
Alianza Lima ruled out any structural failures at the stadium, as did a fire official.
"Based on what has been assessed, no structure has been affected," fire official Marco Pajuelo told news channel Canal N, saying an initial inspection showed no one had fallen into a pit. "There hasn't been any debris."
Saturday's match would proceed as planned, the Peruvian Professional Soccer League said.
"We will continue to work closely with the clubs and authorities to promote safe environments both inside and outside the stadiums," it added in a statement.

The Blues were quiet in January, but that’s not expected to be the case in the summer with a number of positions in the squad needing to be addressed.
Chelsea are said to still be in the market for a centre back, whilst it’s believed they also want to add another midfielder and attacker.
Fabrizio Romano update on Valentin Barco
Midfield is thought to be a priority with the Blues reportedly keen to ease the burden on Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo.
However, there are now major doubts over the future of the World Cup winner, with Liam Rosenior confirming Fernandez will be suspended for the next two games due to his comments during the international break.
Chelsea have been linked with both Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton, although there’s likely to be fierce competition for both players.
Barco is another player who’s been linked with Chelsea, and reports in Argentina had suggested it was a done deal, but Romano has now provided an update.
“Chelsea are closely monitoring the impact of Valentin Barco,” he told his YouTube channel.
“Is not a done deal or completed between Chelsea and Strasbourg. But Chelsea are considering the possibility to sign Valentin Barco.
“They are controlling the situation. It’s not something 100% closed or decided yet, but for sure, it’s a strong possibility for Barco to become a new Chelsea player.”

Alvarez hits 2 homers and Mets bust out at the plate to back McLean in 10-3 blowout of Giants
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Francisco Alvarez homered twice and rookie Nolan McLean retired his first 15 batters as the New York Mets snapped a three-game skid Friday night with a 10-3 rout of the San Francisco Giants.
Bo Bichette and Marcus Semien each had three of New York's season-high 15 hits after the Mets totaled only three runs in their previous three games. Mark Vientos reached base safely four times, but slugger Juan Soto exited early with right calf tightness.
Soto will have imaging done Saturday, manager Carlos Mendoza said.
Semien launched his first homer for the Mets and drove in three runs. Bichette opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first.
McLean (1-0) took a perfect game into the sixth before walking Harrison Bader and Patrick Bailey to begin the inning. Jerar Encarnacion flied out to right field, but Willy Adames doubled to right-center to bring home Bader and end McLean’s night.
The right-hander was charged with two runs (one earned). He struck out four. Four relievers combined to finish a five-hitter.
Run-scoring singles by Bichette and Semien off Tyler Mahle (0-2) gave the Mets a 2-0 lead in the first.
Semien drilled a two-run homer to center off Mahle in the fourth. One out later, Alvarez also took Mahle deep to center.
Alvarez led off the Mets’ three-run seventh with a homer to left off JT Brubaker, giving the catcher three home runs this season and six career multihomer games.
Soto singled in the first and appeared to slow up while running from first to third on Bichette’s RBI single. He was forced out at home when Brett Baty grounded into a 1-2-3 double play, and Tyrone Taylor replaced Soto in left field for the bottom of the inning.
The 27-year-old Soto has hit safely in all eight games this season. He's in the second season of a record $765 million, 15-year contract with the Mets. He had 43 homers and 105 RBIs last season.

The Michigan Wolverines have made it all the way to the 2026 Final Four as a No. 1 seed, and they did so without guard L.J. Cason.
He played in 28 games during the regular season, but in late February, he suffered a knee injury against Illinois. Cason suffered the injury in the first half of Michigan's game against Illinois. Fans were hopeful that it wasn't a bad injury because he was able to return briefly in the second half. Cason ended up leaving the game and was ruled out for the season with his injury.
Here is more on why Carson hasn't been playing for Michigan.

Where is L.J. Cason?
Cason has been sidelined since late February with a torn ACL. He sustained the injury in the first half of the game against Illinois. Cason has not played since and, despite returning briefly in the second half, was ruled out for the remainder of the season.
What happened to L.J. Cason?
Cason suffered a torn ACL in the first half against Illinois on February 27. He was chasing down a ball and then was even able to deliver a between-the-legs bounce pass before he landed awkwardly. Cason got up and couldn't put much weight on his knee. He was checked out by trainers and, after getting some work on his knee, actually returned briefly in the second half. After he checked out, he did not return for the remainder of the season.
Despite being out for the season, Cason was able to join his teammates in cutting down the regional nets after winning the Elite Eight.

L.J. Cason ACL recovery timeline
Cason said that his surgery was scheduled for April 9, and he noted it was "after we win a national championship." After the surgery, he will have to use crutches for at least a week, per Emory Health Care. All told, the recovery period is expected to be six months before he can return to the basketball court. He will likely have to ramp up slowly to get game-ready. With Cason's injury occurring in February, he should be ready to resume basketball activity by late August or early September.
This would put Cason on track to be ready by the start of the 2026-2027 college basketball season, barring setbacks.
