Mofokeng’s simple answer says everything about his evolution
Speaking during his Man of the Match collection, Mofokeng was asked to reveal his preferred role between the number 10 and left wing positions.
RELEBOHILE MOFOKENG SAYS ORLANDO PIRATES STYLE OF PLAY SUPPORTS HIS NUMBER 10 ROLE
“I think the style we play here at Pirates, a 10 is suitable for me,” Mofokeng said on SuperSport TV. “I’m not really someone who likes running. I’m someone who prefers tight spaces.
“So, I think the number 10 position is fine for me. Even on the wing I like to play, but the best for me is the number 10 position,” Mofokeng concluded.
HOW DID IT ALL START?
The Sharpeville-born star didn’t take long to announce himself at Orlando Pirates. During the 2022/23 season, the 21-year-old came through the club’s DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) reserve team after joining from the famed Transnet School of Excellence.
In his first two appearances at age 17, he already had a goal and an assist. He was mainly used out wide, relying on his pace to stretch defences and bring energy to the attack.
The 2023/24 season saw Mofokeng become a regular feature in the squad, making 38 appearances in all competitions. He finished the season with five goals and six assists, but it was his big moment in the Nedbank Cup final against Mamelodi Sundowns that stood out.
By the 2024/25 season, he had fully taken control of the number 10 role. Across 49 matches, Mofokeng delivered his best numbers yet: 12 goals and 15 assists. With 27 goal contributions, he became the main creative force in the team.
Now in the current 2025/26 season, Mofokeng has kept that level going. With 28 appearances so far, he has already registered 10 goals and six assists. His latest contribution came on Tuesday with a brace in a 5-0 win over Golden Arrows.

Crusaders lose All Blacks duo
The Crusaders will head into a key phase of their Super Rugby campaign without two of their biggest names.
Coach Rob Penney confirmed on Wednesday that All Blacks duo Will Jordan and Codie Taylor will miss Saturday’s clash with the Reds through injury.
Jordan has been ruled out with a calf problem, while Taylor is sidelined with a hamstring strain. No timeline has been given for their return.

Penney admitted the timing was far from ideal with the Crusaders entering what he described as a decisive period in their season.
“He tried to get going, but it just wasn’t worth pushing him,” Penney said of Jordan. “He’s had a big workload and this is just an unfortunate set of circumstances.”
Taylor’s absence comes just days after a standout performance in the Crusaders’ 69-26 win over the Fijian Drua –a match in which the hooker crossed for four tries in the final fixture played at Rugby League Park.
Despite the setbacks, Penney believes his side is well placed to navigate the challenge.
“The next couple of weeks are massively important,” he said. “We’ve got a really good plan. We’ve just got to get some results and keep building.”

Barrett: Bok hiding still hurts
The scars from the Springboks’ record win over New Zealand last year are still fresh in the All Blacks camp.
Flyhalf Beauden Barrett says the memory of the heavy defeat continues to hang over the team months later.
South Africa stunned the All Blacks 43-10 in Wellington in the Rugby Championship – the biggest victory the Springboks have ever recorded over their fiercest rivals.

For the players involved, the aftermath was unforgettable.
“There is a deep feeling of pain, almost like a deathly silence and a look that we (as players) gave each other after what we had experienced,” Barrett said on the Devlin Sports Podcast Network.
“The feeling in the dressing room was one of mourning. We feel those kinds of disappointing defeats more (than the supporters). There is for every player perhaps a specific match that was more disappointing, but as a player you can clearly remember the heavy feeling in the dressing room from those defeats that hurt the most.”
The defeat eclipsed South Africa’s previous record victory over New Zealand – the famous 35-7 thumping at Twickenham before the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Barrett now hopes the All Blacks will have the chance to respond when the two giants meet again later this year in the Greatest Rivalry tour.
New Zealand will be in South Africa between August and September, with the old foes set to clash in three Tests on South African soil before a fourth meeting in the United States.
Whether Barrett will be part of that squad remains to be seen, with new All Blacks coach Dave Rennie set to decide on his selections.
