Sprinters expected to light up the track at Hezekiel Sepeng Invitational

All eyes will be locked on what is expected to be a thrilling men’s 100m race when the domestic senior athletics season gains momentum on Tuesday night (5.30pm start) at the Hezekiel Sepeng Invitational, a World Athletics Challenger Tour track and field meeting taking place in Potchefstroom.

The short dash should light up the track at NWU McArthur Stadium, with a packed line-up that features some of the fastest men in Africa.

The field includes national record holder Akani Simbine, a three-time Olympic Games finalist, as well as 400m world record holder Wayde van Niekerk, who will be eager to prove he still has the speed that made him the most versatile sprinter on the planet earlier in his career.

Other athletes to watch include African Championships medallist Benjamin Richardson, who previously represented South Africa but has switched allegiance to Ireland (though he is still based in Potchefstroom), and fellow sub-10 athlete Retshidisitswe Mlenga, a former world youth champion.

Other events

Aside from the men’s 100m sprint, a number of other events on the programme are likely to have the crowd on its feet.

The men’s long jump competition features five athletes who have cleared eight metres in their careers, spearheaded by former world champion and national record holder Luvo Manyonga, who will look to take another step forward after returning to top-flight competition last year following a second career ban for taking recreational drugs.

Manyonga is up against the likes of Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Jovan van Vuuren and Namibian national record holder Lionel Coetzee.

Among the women, the biggest battle of the night is expected to be waged between local favourite Jo-Ane du Plessis and Czech athlete Nikola Ogrodnikova, who earned the silver and bronze medals respectively in the javelin throw final at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Other athletes in the entry lists include former world indoor champion Prudence Sekgodiso, who lines up in the women’s 800m race; Olympic 800m finalist Tshepiso Masalela of Botswana, who turns out in the men’s two-lap contest; Czech athlete Jakub Vadlejch, a three-time World Championships medallist who goes in the men’s javelin throw; and national women’s 100m hurdles record holder Marione Fourie, who is up against rising junior star Tumi Ramokgopa.

ZESCO United ban lifted by Zambian Premier League

The Zambian Premier League have confirmed their decision to lift the suspension slapped on ZESCO United from taking part in the Zambian Super League.

ZESCO were expelled from the Zambian Premier League (ZPL) for breaching football rules and regulations by taking a football related dispute to a conventional court of law.

The suspension threw the league’s fixtures in turmoil and compromised careers of coaches and players. However, in a statement, Zambia Premier League have confirmed overturning the decision.

Suspension of ZESCO United lifted

“The Zambian Premier League (ZPL) hereby confirms the immediate lifting of the suspension of ZESCO United Football Club from the league,” read part of the statement.

“This follows the mutual agreement by both parties to withdraw the court case. In addition, their week 20 fixture against Green Eagles will proceed as planned.

The ZPL looks forward to the amicable resolution of all outstanding matters and the smooth progression of the league.”

Following this development, the club formally engaged the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) and requested that it facilitates for the convening of the constitutionally established Arbitration Tribunal to determine the matter in accordance with the governing statutes.

Despite these efforts, FAZ and the ZPL did not oblige the club’s request, and in fact intimated that the matter was administrative and did not require the intervention of any other body beyond FAZ and the ZPL.

Why ZESCO United was banned

ZESCO United went to the traditional court of law to challenge their removal from the ABSA Cup over their earlier fixture against Mutondo Stars, which had already been played earlier in the season.

During its assessment, ZPL classified the match as a postponed fixture although ZESCO United had reached the required 17-game threshold needed for qualification.

The Ndola-based team was subsequently instructed to replay the fixture, which they lost resulting in the forfeiture of their ABSA Cup slot to FC MUZA, a team founded by Zimbabwe Football Association president Keith Mweemba, who announced that he is no longer involved in its administration after assuming the highest office.

There is a lot at stake as the ABSA Cup winners earn the ticket to represent Zambia in the CAF Confederation Cup and ZESCO were the holders.

The ABSA Cup defending champions represented Zambia in the CAF Confederation Cup before the exiting the group stages with just one win, beating previous holders Zamalek while losing most of the matches to Kaizer Chiefs and Al Masry FC also from Egypt.

Orlando Pirates’ expected starting 11 vs Golden Arrows

Following the 6-0 drubbing of TS Galaxy on 22 March before the FIFA break, Orlando Pirates are unlikely to make changes to the team that started at the Mbombela Stadium, except for Oswin Appollis starting ahead of Andre De Jong, who could have had a better game.

Goalkeeper: Sipho Chaine, right-back: Kamohelo Sebelebele, central defenders: Nkosinathi Sibisi and Lebone Seema, left back: Deon Hotto, central midfielders: Makhehleni Makhaula and Thalente Mbatha, Relebohile Mofokeng, wingers: Oswin Appollis and Tshepang Moremi, striker: Yanela Mbuthuma.

Moroccan coach Ouaddou was indeed a defender at the highest level. The Sea Robbers have only conceded nine goals in 22 matches. Offensively, Orlando Pirates have been equally excellent with 40 goals in 22, just one behind Sundowns.

Early season success included lifted the MTN8 and Carling Knockout titles.

Tuesday night’s visitors Golden Arrows, known as Abafana Bes’thende, have been highly exciting at times but too inconsistent.

Coach Manqoba Mngqithi’s side sit 8th place with 28 points from 22 games. They have only 8 wins, 4 draws, and 10 losses.
