Asian Games: India’s Quiet Multi-Sport Awakening

PC: Asian Games 2026

For most of India’s sporting history, cricket owned the back pages, the prime-time slots, and the advertising budgets, while disciplines like shooting, badminton, wrestling, and athletics survived on shoestring federations and the occasional government notice or sometimes an athlete doing the nation proud on the world stage. The Asian Games is quietly chipping away at that imbalance, turning into a brand that is nudging the country toward a genuinely multi-sport identity. forestarrow.rest

The shift became impossible to ignore after India’s record-breaking medal haul at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, where the contingent crossed 100 medals for the first time. Names that would once have stayed confined to niche sports pages … Neeraj Chopra, Avinash Sable, Satwik Chirag, Annu Rani and the men’s and women’s hockey teams became prime-time fixtures. Because the Asian Games bundles together everything from athletics and shooting to kabaddi and esports, it forces Indian broadcasters and fans to sit with sports they would otherwise check in on only once every four years.

I remember how the opening ceremony would command more interest in the household than the actual games. What used to be a fortnight of polite interest has started to outlast the closing ceremony. Shooters and badminton players are no longer anonymous names buried in agency copy; they are chased for interviews and endorsements in a way that felt improbable a decade ago. In this context, Revsportz has not just championed the cause of multi sport; Boria Majumdar and his team have walked the talk by sending in dedicated teams to every sports event in the last four years. In many cases, and poignantly in the case of paralympic sport, they were the only platform covering the event!

Part of this change is deliberate. The Sports Authority of India and the Indian Olympic Association have gotten sharper at packaging Games performance as a story of national pride rather than a technical medal count. When I heard Pullela Gopichand speaking last week, I noticed he mentioned government schemes like Khelo India and the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) in the same breath as Asian Games results, linking grassroots funding directly to podium finishes. Sponsors have followed: apparel brands, telecom players, and fintech companies increasingly attach themselves to individual athletes across shooting, athletics, and badminton, not just to cricket stars. Medal success has become an argument for grassroots investment – a cycle that rarely existed in Indian sport before.

States chasing a bigger share of the medal tally have started investing in shooting ranges, athletics tracks, and hockey turfs that didn’t exist a generation ago. Khelo India centres are beginning to reference Asian Games disciplines by name, introducing children in smaller towns to sports beyond the neighbourhood cricket pitch. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has recently announced plans to build a world-class Olympic City and a dedicated Motor Sports City in Chennai, with the latter designed to host Formula 1–4 races – a twin push to turn the state into a hub for elite athlete training and international motorsport.

Sustained broadcast slots for non-cricket sports, sponsorship money that doesn’t disappear once the closing ceremony ends, and consistent funding for federations that have historically run on shoestring budgets will decide whether this is a lasting shift or a temporary flicker of attention. Many federations will have to put their house in order first; but this is an entire story that merits a separate evaluation.

Still, the direction of travel looks real. The Asian Games has gone from a regional footnote in Indian sporting consciousness to a brand capable of reshaping how the country thinks about sport and not as one game followed by a billion people, but as many games, each finally getting a turn in the spotlight.
