On the same day the Steelers received the worst grades in the entire league in the NFL Players Association’s leaked 2026 team report cards — including an “F-” in the “home game field” category — Steelers owner Art Rooney II announced Pittsburgh’s Acrisure Stadium will be resurfaced ahead of the new season, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac.
The playing field will be resurfaced with Tahoma 31 Bermuda, “a mixture of Bermuda and bluegrass grown on plastic sheets,” Dulac reported. Previously, the stadium used Kentucky bluegrass.
Dulac noted the team’s new grass blend is already used at the home stadiums of the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears. Tahoma 31 was also the playing surface of Super Bowl LVII, which was heavily criticized for its slippery field conditions, but Dulac’s article states it was because the sod was installed too late.
For what it’s worth, the Bears scored a “C” in the home game field category, and the Eagles an “A,” in the leaked 2026 report cards acquired by ESPN.
Both the Steelers and the NCAA’s Pitt Panthers play home games at Acrisure Stadium, leading to more wear and tear on the field than some other NFL venues. Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers called the surface “borderline unplayable” following Oct. 12’s home win over the Cleveland Browns, where kicker Chris Boswell slipped and missed a fourth-quarter field goal.
