Arsenal are the front-runners to sign Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon ahead of Liverpool and Manchester United this summer, according to The Sun.
The Gunners are likely to reinforce their attacking department this summer and a marquee left winger could be a top priority for manager Mikel Arteta.
Gordon has been talked about as a target in recent months, and The Sun claim that the Gunners are leading Liverpool and United in the player’s pursuit.
The Gunners believe Gordon would be happy to head South to London this summer. Arteta is reportedly a big admirer of him from his early years at Everton.
The winger will enter the last two years of his contract. The Magpies will demand £95 million for him, but Arsenal are likely to end up paying £75m to £80m.
Gordon could replace Trossard, not Martinelli
The 25-year-old has not been at his best in the Premier League this campaign, but his form has been quite extraordinary in the Champions League.
Gordon has notched up 19 goal contributions in all competitions. Out of those, he has made 12 goal contributions from just 10 European games.
The Everton graduate is primarily a left-sided winger, but can also operate from the right wing or upfront.
Arteta has a preference for versatile players and it could be a reason behind the ongoing interest.
The Sun claim that Gabriel Martinelli could depart to compensate for Gordon’s arrival, but Leandro Trossard could be the player to make way instead.
Trossard was handed an improved salary last summer without extending his deal beyond June 2027. The Belgian could be sold as he enters the last year of his contract.
The 31-year-old had a bright start to the season with the Gunners, but his form has been inconsistent in recent months. He could be shown the exit door this summer.
Gordon would be a good competitor to Martinelli. He has similar attributes as the Brazilian with his pace and quick dribbling skills, and would suit Arsenal’s playing style.
