A fight in the fourth quarter of the MHSAA boys basketball district final between Detroit Edison and Detroit University Prep led to a shooting outside of the school, according to Detroit Police.
Officers responded to an altercation at 8:28 p.m. Friday at Edison High School, where a fight in the stands spilled out onto the court and outside of the school. An unknown suspect fired gunshots and struck a teenage male, according to police.
The teenager was privately transported to the hospital, where he is in stable condition, according to police. The investigation is ongoing and the department is asking anyone with information to reach out to the 7th precinct.
The fight began in the crowd with a little over two minutes left in UPrep's 66-57 win over Edison in the Michigan high school boys basketball state tournament Division 2 district final. Fans in the stands on the opposite side of the gym convened in a large crowd, stopping action on the court in the middle of the play.
The brawl began at 8:22 p.m.
It spilled out from the stands into the middle of the basketball court. School officials, security, parents and members of both teams' coaching staffs rushed in to try and stop the fight and eventually ushered most involved outside of the school.
Cops and Edison school officials on-site declined to comment because it was an ongoing investigation.
Security and police continued to clear out the gym for the next 20 minutes. The game eventually resumed in front of a much smaller crowd mainly featuring parents of players. Cops were blocking off part of the sidewalk outside the school as fans who remained until the end of the game exited.
UPrep closed out the win, led by a 24-point performance by Mo Jackson. The Panthers face Harper Woods Chandler Park in next Tuesday's regional semifinals.
