2026 F1 Rule Changes: Drivers Say Cars Are Less Pure, Still on Grip Limits

F1’s 2026 rule overhaul has prompted top drivers to say the cars are less about pure driving and more about energy management, but they still push the limits of grip.

The 2026 regulations, which cut downforce and introduce new hybrid power units, have led champions like Verstappen, Hamilton, Alonso and Norris to describe the sport as less about pure driving and more about managing energy. They argue that the cars now require a different approach, with power limits affecting cornering rather than grip alone.

However, during pre‑season testing in Bahrain, all drivers—including Russell, Antonelli and Bearman—stated they were still on the limit of the available grip most of the time. The reduced downforce means corners feel more power‑limited, but the skill to extract maximum performance remains crucial, and a faster driver will still beat a slower one.
