4 takeaways from Bills head coach Joe Brady at 2026 NFL combine — and more

4 takeaways from Bills head coach Joe Brady at 2026 NFL combine

1045 The Buffalo Bills and rest of the NFL are in business mode at the 2026 NFL combine in Indianapolis throughout this week.

Along with nitpicking and chatting to prospects entering the upcoming draft, Buffalo's front office spoke at interviews of their own... namely general manager Brandon Beane and head coach Joe Brady.

With that, here are four takeaways from Brady's combine press conference:

His coordinators

Brady hired Pete Carmichael Jr. and Jim Leonhard as his defensive and offensive coordinators, respectively. Naturally, Brady praised both additions.

Per Brady, Carmichael was his "first call" and Leonhard was a "no-brainer" decision.

Brady's full thoughts on both can be found below:

Josh Allen update

Relating to several injured players from the end of the 2025 season, Brady did not get into specifics. However, he did have a positive note on quarterback Josh Allen, who had offseason surgery:

More for Shakir?

With lots of wide receiver commentary surrounding Keon Coleman early this offseason, Brady made an interesting note on Khalil Shakir.

As head coach, Brady remains a big fan of Shakir... even referencing more usage down the field potentially coming in 2026.

What's new

Aside from the obvious, Brady said one thing is a big difference for him at the combine as a head coach. Previously as Buffalo's offensive coordinator, he did not help interview defensive prospects at the event. Now Brady is.

“It's unique because I'm getting to sit in these defensive meetings,” Brady said. “That's what's been a lot of fun is I understand what it's like going against these defensive backs, going against these defensive ends, well now, getting to sit in the formal interviews and see kind of what makes them tick, the personalities, I'm so used to offensive line personalities and now I'm getting to see the defensive line personalities in these interviews.”

Trump, DeSantis to tackle college sports' NIL issues

Florida will be represented when President Donald Trump convenes a "Saving College Sports" roundtable March 6 at the White House to discuss issues related to a once-amateur pursuit that is rapidly evolving into a professionalized industry.

Gov. Ron DeSantis will be vice chair for the meeting, focused on how to develop rules and regulations in the wake of court decisions that enable college athletes to be compensated for use of their name, image, or likeness. News of the summit was first reported by Yahoo Sports.

President Donald Trump walks with Governor Ron DeSantis after arriving on Air Force One at Palm Beach International Airport in West Palm Beach, Florida on Nov. 26, 2019.

Without anti-trust protection, which courts have invalidated, or a collective bargaining agreement that could designate players as employees, college athletics is currently a marketplace with few rules. Wealthy universities can fill their rosters by outspending competitors who aren’t backed by well-financed boosters.

Trump has made the issue a priority. The idea for the summit apparently emerged from a Feb. 15 golf outing the president hosted at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach that included DeSantis and former college coaches Urban Meyer of the University of Florida, Mack Brown of North Carolina, and Nick Saban of Alabama. They all were invited to the roundtable.

Also among the 40 people invited to the White House roundtable, according to ESPN, are two Heisman Trophy winners from the state.

On the list is former Florida State University quarterback and current Florida A&M University basketball coach Charlie Ward, who won the award for best football player in 1992, and the University of Florida’s Tim Tebow, the 2007 winner.

Invitations were also sent to Tiger Woods, former U.S. Secretary of State and College Football Playoff selection committee member Condoleezza Rice, ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro, and Indiana University Athletics Director Scott Dolson.

Despite Trump’s support for NIL regulations and multiple college athletics directors calling for congressional action, supporters have been unable to get a bill to move in Congress. Yahoo Sports said it is unclear if all the people invited have accepted the invitation.

Louisiana Rejects One-Time Transfer Rule

At the LHSAA convention in New Orleans, 287 principals and administrators opposed the measure while only 59 voted in favor. Barbe principal Troy Fontenot expressed opposition, stating he couldn't support something that would harm smaller schools.

The decision comes as other Southeastern states like Florida and South Carolina also grapple with transfer eligibility issues, with some considering significant changes to their high school sports governance.

Goodwin on underdog status, top-six fight & 'remarkable' Motherwell

Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin has been speaking to the media before his side's Premiership trip to play Motherwell on Saturday.

Here are the main points:

  • Goodwin admits "we will probably be underdogs in a lot of people's eyes" against a Motherwell side who have had a "remarkable" season, but United "believe we are capable of beating any opposition on any given day".
  • Goodwin says his defenders can take confidence from the midweek 0-0 draw with Aberdeen, which was just their fourth clean sheet in the league this season.
  • He added that "concentration levels are going to be key" against a very good attacking team and a striker, Tawanda Maswanhise, who is "having the season of his career".
  • United are seventh in the table, nine points behind Falkirk in sixth, but Goodwin insists "we certainly won't give up the fight" of getting into the top half, adding "we have just got to keep believing".
  • Amid what has been an ultra-competitive top division this term, Goodwin believes "'it has been a tough tough league for everybody" and he doesn't believe "there is a team at the top of the table that looks forward to playing any of the fixtures at this moment in time".
  • Immersed in a hectic schedule Goodwin admits "there is a bit of fatigue and a few bumps and bruises within the squad".
  • And with three games in a week coming up the United boss stresses "we have a few decisions to make tomorrow with regards to the starting 11".
  • Goodwin was again asked about the condition of the much-maligned Tannadice pitch and is disappointed it "has become this talking point".
  • He adds no blame is being pointed at anyone and stresses it is not down to a lack of investment in the pitch but due to things outwith United's control - namely the horrendous weather combined with a busy schedule of fixtures.
