Makybe Diva, the legendary mare who captured the Melbourne Cup in 2003, 2004 and 2005, passed away at 26 after a brief bout of colic at her retirement stable near Geelong. Owner Tony Santic, a Croatian‑born tuna fisherman, said the horse earned $10 million in prize money and was a beloved family member.
Jockey Glen Boss, who rode her to all three victories, said the mare left a huge footprint in Australian racing history and that he was honored to have been part of her legacy.
