Chiefs' draft plan revealed with 1 distinct flavor

The Kansas City Chiefs' approach to the offseason will, for most, be an offensive one.

With the running back situation needing an overhaul, plus a new right tackle after Jawaan Taylor was, as expected, released, there is no shortage of needs offensively.

But it appears that the Chiefs, at least early in the draft, might actually be going a different way than many expect.

The Athletic's Jesse Newell reports that the Chiefs could look to bolster their defense in the upcoming draft.

“The Chiefs are likely to target interior defensive line early in the draft," Newell wrote. "Kansas City general manager Brett Veach made clear during his NFL combine podium time that the Chiefs need to get out of their cycle of stopgapping the rotation next to All-Pro Chris Jones with low-ceiling veterans.

“The high-upside defensive tackles come through the draft, so it’d be a surprise to me if the Chiefs don’t use a Day 1 or 2 pick on that specific spot.”

Is defense the right draft approach?

We have seen several mock drafts where the Chiefs take Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love at No. 9, and for me, that has to be the pick.

If Love is off the board early, which, based on his combine tests, suggests he will be, then the Chiefs can pivot to getting a pass rusher or defensive tackle.

Yes, the defense needs work, but so too does the offense, and you could make the case that last season, it was the offense that was the worst out of the two.

Either way, it will be interesting to see how Brett Veach approaches the offseason, and it appears that it might have a defensive flavor to it.
