Thursday Cheese Curds: 3-4 or 4-3? The Packers’ answer may be “yes”

When the Packers hired Jonathan Gannon to run their defense, the first question most had was “what base will the Packers run now?” Gannon’s résumé features both 4-3 and 3-4. As head coach of the Arizona Cardinals he deployed a 3-4 front, while 4-3 was the preferred flavor during his time as defensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles.

As reported by SI’s Bill Huber, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst may have dropped some bread crumbs this week at the Scouting Combine. During his press availability, he hinted that Gannon’s version of the defense may incorporate more “3-4 principles in base” than fans will have noticed under former DC Jeff Hafley. Yet he also acknowledged the modern NFL’s requirements, saying “it’s really more about the back end … it’s a nickel defense league right now,” and predicting the Packers will largely deploy four-down fronts with five defensive backs for most situations.

Gutekunst’s combine comments reinforce this theme of structural versatility. He noted a need for depth at inside linebacker (traditionally linked with 3-4 defenses, as Justis Mosqueda recently flagged), while underscoring their focus on internal development and sustainable cap management as it assembles personnel for Gannon’s system.

So what’s the practical outcome? It may be that fronts matter less and are flexible rather than prescriptive (ex: a 4-3 skeleton that can morph into 3-4 looks depending on the situation). With the league trending toward nickel dominance, the Packers’ strategy under Gannon may not be about choosing one front, but about deploying personnel and fronts that maximize adaptability. Crap, I sound like Gutkunst now, don’t I?
