All Houston Texans fans need to know is that Pro Bowl quarterback C.J. Stroud is on board with the hiring of new quarterbacks coach Jerry Schuplinski.
Now, it's time to see if the fourth-year passer can improve under his watch.
Schuplinski, a former New England Patriots coach and longtime NFL assistant, is expected to take over for Jerrod Johnson, who mutually agreed to part ways with the Texans earlier this month. Over the past year, Schuplinski has worked as an offensive assistant, mostly spending time working alongside quarterbacks.
Before coming to Houston, Schuplinski spent a year in Los Angeles as an offensive assistant working with Texans offensive coordinator Nick Caley and head coach Sean McVay. Before that, he worked in New England with Caley and Texans general manager Nick Caserio, starting in 2013 as an offensive assistant. He would be promoted to assistant quarterbacks coach in 2016, a role he would keep for three seasons, helping future MVP Tom Brady Schuplinski win three Super Bowls in his six seasons.
Even though the time has been limited, it's clear that Stroud has a tight bond with his new quarterbacks coach, along with a sense of respect to his craft.
“Jerry is amazing, man,” Stroud told reporters in September. “He’s somebody who is very vocal, challenging. He’s very old school. He reminds me of like a lost uncle, just how he approaches how he coaches.”
The Texans own eight picks in the upcoming NFL draft.
