Football Legend Holtz Loved Golf

Football coaching legend Lou Holtz, who died Wednesday at 89, had a deep passion for golf that was nearly as significant as his football career.

Holtz was a single-digit handicapper who hosted SiriusXM's "Holtz in One" and was a member at prestigious clubs including Augusta National, where he won the member-member in 2005. Though he became famous for leading Notre Dame to a national championship, his golf accomplishments brought him particular pride, once calling being on the Augusta National plaque "my greatest accomplishment."

The coach-turned-golf-enthusiast developed friendships with players like Lee Trevino and had a humorous story about being replaced by Jack Nicklaus on a Sports Illustrated cover in 1986 after Nicklaus' historic Masters victory. Holtz once quipped about golf: "When I look at my pile of 150 balls at the range, I just know I'm going to have a different swing thought for every one of those balls."
